“Design is communication.” That was my (somewhat immature) answer in the first bachelor’s semester in 2015 when we were asked what design means to us. Even years later, this approach has stuck with me: whether as an art director, web developer or in my more theoretical theses: For me, the focus is always on the question of what, how and why we communicate.
Fan communiation: Knowledge, capital & emotion
Analysis and comparison of communication in fan cultures from different sociological perspectives.
From football get-togethers to conventions and festivals to influencers on social media: fan cultures have become an integral part of our everyday lives. The communication in these scenes often does not just serve the pure exchange of facts and information, but also has social and emotional consequences through the construction and comparison of subcultural capital. In my master’s thesis, I approach the phenomenon from different sociological perspectives. My goal is to develop an overarching theoretical basis for analyzing fan communication.
