My passion is illustration. I particularly liked the science illustration. My highlight was the diversity and freedom that I was able to enjoy across different areas of focus during my studies. My illustrations are also diverse, mostly using naturalistic motifs and using different techniques. I find it exciting to not only have one style, but to be able to apply and use many different ones.

The secret power of the plant kingdom

My concept for a non-fiction book for children ages 10 and up deals with the historical influence of five plants.

Where does the term “Tea Party” come from? How did the Netherlands once almost ruin its economy? Why did the slave trade explode in the 16th century? How could we protect ourselves from malaria without vaccination? And why is the relationship between the Irish and the English so bad?

With this concept for a non-fiction book for children ages 10 and up, I take a look at plants that have shaped our history in five illustrated chapters. They all represent an aspiration that has driven humanity forward: the cinchona tree represents healing, the sugar cane represents addiction, the tulip represents beauty, the potato represents dependence and the tea represents power. The aim is to show what influence plants can have and to place them in a historical and cultural-historical context.
